San Francisco Bay Area
For the seven-day period ending at midnight on Wednesday, October 19,
1994 the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park recorded 33
earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and greater within the San Francisco
Bay area shown in Figure 1. Four of these were as large as M2. This
total compares to 34 earthquakes during the previous seven-day period
(October 6 - 12), nine of which were as large as M2.
Three of the M2 earthquakes occurred along the creeping segment of the
San Andreas. The first of these was a M2.3 last Thursday evening that
occurred about four miles northwest of San Juan Bautista (#1 in figure 1).
The north end of the creeping zone followed with a M2.3 early Sunday
morning about five miles north of Watsonville (#3/1). Finally, a M2.4
Tuesday night occurred between the other two about eight miles northwest
of San Juan Bautista (#4/1).
The remaining M2 earthquake occurred Wednesday afternoon as part of a
small cluster along the southern end of the Black Mountain fault (#5/1).
Though the activity occurred just four miles southwest of Mountain View,
no reports were received that any of these small earthquakes were felt.
The East Bay was relatively quiet with no earthquakes as large as M2.
A couple of M1 earthquakes were recorded along the southern Concord fault
and one M1.2 occurred Monday night on the northern Hayward fault just
north of Richmond.
Two other small earthquakes are worth mentioning: on Monday two M1
events occurred beneath San Francisco Bay about one mile offshore of the
San Francisco airport (#2/1). Earthquakes of this size, though not
common, have occurred in this area before, most recently this past June.
Northern & Central California
Only a few areas were active during the past week. As usual, the Cape
Mendocino area led the list with activity both near the Cape and farther
out along the fracture zone. The outer fracture zone, which previously
had been quite active with aftershocks from the M7.0 earthquake last
month, experienced only one aftershock as large as M3 (#3/2). In
contrast, the fracture zone closer to the Cape experienced three shocks
that were as large as M3 including a M4.1 last Thursday afternoon that was
probably felt in the Petrolia area.
The Coast Range experienced a number of small quakes along the Maacama
fault, only one of which was as large as M2 (#6/2). The Geysers
geothermal area experienced three earthquakes larger than M2 including a
M3.1 Wednesday evening (#7/2).
In the eastern Sierra Nevada, aftershocks continued to decline in the
Markleeville area. During the past week, only 18 aftershocks as large as
M2 were recorded, the largest a M2.8 last Friday evening (#4/2). This
compares to 27 M2 aftershocks during the previous week and 37 M2
aftershocks the week before that.
Two deep earthquakes were recorded beneath the central Sierra Nevada
during the week. The first was a M2.2 that occurred last Thursday evening
about 30 miles southeast of Yosemite Valley at a depth of about 32 km
(#2/2). It was followed on Saturday evening by a M2.1 about 30 miles
southwest of Yosemite Valley that had a focal depth of about 21 km (#5/2).
Long Valley Caldera
Only one earthquake as large as M2 occurred within the caldera during
the week, a M2.5 last Friday afternoon that occurred just south of the
airport (#1/3). One M2 earthquake was also recorded south of the caldera,
a M2.7 that occurred Saturday afternoon southeast of Mt. Morrison (#2/3).
USA Seismicity (October 10 - 19)
Two notable earthquakes occurred in the lower 48 states, outside of
California, according to data provided by the National Earthquake
Information Center. The first of these was a M2.9 last Friday in the
southern region of Puget Sound, Washington (#1/4). Though small, this
event was felt in the nearby town of Port Orchard. On Sunday a M3.5
occurred along the Idaho/Wyoming border that was felt in the town of
Afton, WY (#2/4). Finally, a M4.1 occurred in southeastern California
near the town of Ridgecrest (#3/4).
The Planet Earth (October 10 - 19)
The largest earthquake on the planet was a Ms6.4 in northern Indonesia
that injured 19 people and caused considerable damage on the island of
Obi (#2/5). A Ms6.1 in eastern Papua New Guinea was felt at Rabaul, New
Britain but apparently produced no damage (#3/5). The southern Kuril
Islands/northern Hokkaido area experienced a Mb6.3 earthquake, an
aftershock to the M8.1 quake that occurred October 4 approximately 150
miles offshore of the islands (#5/5). The northern Philippines island of
Luzon experienced several moderate earthquakes during the week, the
largest a Ms5.7 (#1/5).
Notable earthquakes in the western hemisphere included a Mb5.5 in
central Peru (#4/5) and a M4.5 off the coast of central Chile that was
felt in Rocas de Santo Domingo and Valparaiso.
